Every year-end letter is an attempt to somehow summarize a life, to tell the story of a year. For 365 days, I have taught and learned, written and read, made messes and cleaned them up. Wendell Berry said it this way:
“Telling a story is like reaching into a granary full of wheat and drawing out a handful. There is always more to tell than can be told.”
I suppose, in the telling of my handful of grain, I could rummage around in the entrails of Living Our Days and come up with a handful of statistics: number of books reviewed, readers reached, or comments received. I could total up the miles I’ve traveled in 2024 to speak at conferences, retreats, brunches, and lunches. I could even count the glass canning jars full of garden produce glistening in the semi-darkness of our furnace room.
And even if I did all that and then told you that our seventh grandchild is due to arrive in March, there would still be more that could be told.
This one thing I know: My handful in 2024 has been good. And I am grateful.
